A spectacular local landmark on Koh Yao Noi, the Big Tree is unmistakable for its size and beauty – and it’s said by the islanders to be the home of a female spirit too
The Big Tree is one of Koh Yao’s most distinctive landmarks, although few visitors get to see it as it’s at the far north of Koh Yao Noi. (Guests at The Paradise Koh Yao resort are very near to it. The best way otherwise to get to see it is to get a longtail boat from the south of the island up to Ao Kian Bay – the road is hard work).
The Big Tree is over 100 metres high, 300 years old and so large it would take 20 people standing in a circle to go around its circumferance. In scientific terms it’s classified as Hopea Dipterocarpaceae, part of the genus of lowland tropical rainforest trees. It’s understandably protected under Thai law, but local legend says it’s also the home of the female spirit Nang Ta Kian, who will bring to bad luck to anyone who cuts or otherwise damages the tree.
