The best way to get around Koh Yao is either by bicycle or by motorbike. You can hire both easily on Koh Yao Noi – motorbikes are available as automatic or manual scooters for around 250 baht a day. Mountain bikes are available for around 200 baht a day. You can also hire motorbikes with sidecars which can fit 2 adults (so 3 people total with the bike driver) – this is a great option for families, and exciting for the kids.
If you don’t want to drive a bike, you can hire a songthaew truck at around 85 Baht a journey. These are vans with wooden benches in the back that can seat 6 to 8 people. Your Koh Yao hotel can help you find a songthaew – it’s best to take the driver’s phone number as it can be difficult finding another songthaew to take you to your next destination.
Koh Yao Noi and Koh Yao Yai are basically flat, with a few big hills, and they are almost devoid of car traffic. The locals almost exclusively drive motorbikes and motorbikes with sidecars, and they tend to drive unhurriedly. While you always need to keep your wits about you, driving a motorbike or riding a bike on Koh Yao is far more relaxed and easy than other parts of Thailand.
While it is not currently compulsory to wear a helmet when driving a bike on Koh Yao, we strongly recommend you do so and only hire from a place that can provide helmets for driver and passenger. Accidents happen, even if it’s absolutely no fault of your own, and you need to protect yourself. Similarly, you should avoid driving without wearing a shirt or decent shoes. Flip flops are not much help if you need to come to a sudden stop. You should also make sure you have travel insurance before driving any kind of bike – pedal powered or engine powered – in Thailand.
